AMC 8 (National Math Exam) 2018

Do you like competitive mathematics? Have you heard about the AMC 8?

The AMC 8 is a 25 question, 40 minute multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills. This year, the AMC 8 will be given nationally on Tuesday, November 13, 2018.

We will be administering the AMC 8 here at GRMS on Tuesday, November 13, 3-4 pm, in the MPR. This is not a required exam for any student. It is entirely optional and quite challenging.

The test is not free. We are asking each participant to return $6 (cash or check made out to GRMS) along with the registration form. Turn in the completed registration form and money to your math teacher or Mrs. Bergen by Friday, September 28th, 2018.

To register, go to this link and print the page.

The examination provides students an opportunity to apply the concepts taught at the middle school level to problems which not only range from easy to difficult but also cover a wide range of applications. Many problems are designed to challenge students and to offer problem solving experiences beyond those provided in most middle school math classrooms. Additionally, the AMC 8 can promote excitement, enthusiasm, and positive attitudes toward mathematics.

More information about the AMC 8, released and practice questions, and the AMC 10 can be found at

Parents who live outside the boundaries of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District now have the opportunity to seek interdistrict transfers to enroll their children at SRVUSD schools. SRVUSD has streamlined the enrollment request process for eligible families who reside in other Bay Area communities, reducing the stress of finding a high-performing new school.

First, a family must obtain an interdistrict transfer approval document from its home school district. Second, if the student is in middle school or high school, SRVUSD will need to review transcripts, discipline records and attendance records from the previous school.

Transfer requests are approved based on space availability and a review of transcripts, discipline and attendance records.

In some cases, a family’s home school district will send the documentation to SRVUSD when a parent makes the transfer request. In a few other cases, the family will have to handle the paperwork.

Families interested in transferring their children to SRVUSD should check with their home school districts to begin the process.

SRVUSD is one of California’s top performing school districts. More than 98 percent of its students graduate from high school, and 95 percent of those grads plan to attend college, with 71 percent attending a four-year university. Student attendance rate is 97 percent at SRVUSD.

Academic success is a tradition at SRVUSD schools – a tradition well known to university admissions officers. In college placement exams, SRVUSD students rank exceptionally high, with 88 percent scoring 21 or higher on the ACT and 83 percent scoring 1,500 or better on the SAT.  Almost 40 percent of SRVUSD students enroll in Advanced Placement classes, and 88 percent earn at least a Grade 3 on AP exams.

The SRVUSD experience doesn’t stop at college preparedness. The district offers more than 450 sections of performing arts classes. And younger children are exposed to fun ways to learn, with a science lab and science classroom specialist available at SRVUSD elementary schools.

SRVUSD is built for success in the 21st century, with 100 percent of its classrooms and other learning spaces updated with wireless connectivity. The district has more than 6,400 Apple laptops for students, along with more than 3,000 PCs and over 2,000 Chromebooks. SRVUSD students also have access to more than 5,600 iPads and Android tablets.

SRVUSD has approximately 32,000 students in 36 schools, taught and cared for by 3,500 dedicated employees.

For questions about how families can apply for interdistrict transfers to enroll their children with SRVUSD, please visit

or contact Student Services at (925) 552-5076.

Hope you’re doing well. We are looking for student-teachers who are willing to teach at nearby elementary and middle schools after school. This year, our team taught at Coyote Creek Elementary School and managed to get over 70 students with only 3 teachers. For next year, we are looking for some interested students who would like to join our program as we are expecting to teach at 4-5 other schools with about 500 students total.

Our program provides an enjoyable, easy and beneficial way to complete your C(J)SF/volunteering hours and is directed mainly towards high school students with experience in computer science, although we won’t deny anyone who is willing to learn!

We also have open leadership positions (will close soon! Apply as soon as possible) for those who enjoy managing finances, communicating with people, managing appointments, and more. We hope that you don’t miss out on this opportunity and for more info please check out our website @ (Yes, the domain is soon to be changed). We will be starting next year, but we want to expand our network to anyone who's interested, hence this news.

Dear Gale Ranch Middle School Families,

As many of you are aware, the district is in the process of implementing Personalized Learning Options (PLO) that focus on flexibility and options for middle and high school students.  Many of the ideas will be put into effect for the 2018-2019 school year.  While the majority of them will impact high school students, a few of them will affect middle school students and families.  Below are descriptions of the PLOs that could possibly impact your child next year:

Six-Class Option (Instead of Typical Seven-Classes):

WHAT: Students have the option of taking only six classes by NOT taking one of their elective periods (only take 6 periods of classes and a lunch period). Students will have the choice of selecting a time preference of Periods 1-7 or Periods 2-8.  *Depending on course options and budget/staff availability, we will attempt to honor your time preference; however, we cannot guarantee you will get your first choice.

HOW:  You will receive information on how to choose this option during Course Selection in March 2018.

Please note:  If you choose this option, students must arrive/leave campus when their school day begins/ends.  There will be no supervision before/after school for students not enrolled in an elective, and they must leave campus.

Independent Study Physical Education (ISPE):

WHAT: Students qualifying for ISPE are exceptionally gifted athletes who are competing at the regional, state, or national competition level within the school year in an individual sport.  The physical activity MUST be an individual sport (team sports are not permitted).  Students in 7th grade will still be responsible for completing their Fitnessgram Tests. Parent/Guardian is not eligible to serve as instructor/coach. In addition, instructor/coach must carry proper liability insurance for the activity in which they are giving instruction.

HOW: Applications will be available on the GRMS and SRVUSD websites under "Personalized Learning" by Monday, April 16 and will be due to Ms. Eberly, Assistant Principal.

Please note:  If you choose this option, students must arrive/leave campus when their school day begins/ends.  There will be no supervision before/after school for students not enrolled in a PE class.

World Language through Heritage Language Schools:

WHAT: Students taking a language at an SRVUSD-approved Heritage Language School (current offerings include SiliconAndhra ManaBadi Telugu School, Chinese American Cooperation Council (CACC) School, and International Tamil Academy) will be able to use the classes for advancement purposes once they promote from eighth grade.  Students will not receive credit toward high school graduation for any courses taken prior to promoting from eighth grade.  If the Heritage School language is offered at the student’s home school, Heritage credit will not be awarded on the high school transcript.

HOW: Parents are responsible for enrolling their child into the SRVUSD-approved Heritage School of their choice.

We believe that the implementation of these Personalized Learning Options will truly help to reduce student stress, and increase student flexibility and choice with their program of study.  Please visit the district’s website at for additional information.

State law gives families the option to transfer to a different school when there is space available. When schools have space, families can choose to transfer to another school within a district (intradistrict transfers) or to transfer to a school in another district (interdistrict transfers).

SRVUSD has moved up its intradistrict open enrollment window for elementary families. The open enrollment window for elementary schools is now open and closes on April 6, 2018. Families can find the link to the online intradistrict transfer request form and information about SRVUSD’s open enrollment/intradistrict transfer process at

SRVUSD students will continue to have placement priority in our schools. However, after we place our resident students at their school of choice, because we now have space available, California law requires that we allow students from outside the district to apply to attend our schools (interdistrict transfers). Interdistrict transfers will only be accepted if there is space available. Students from outside the district must maintain acceptable academic performance, attendance and behavior. SRVUSD anticipates openings for interdistrict transfers students at nearly all SRVUSD schools.

SRVUSD recognizes that some students want to challenge themselves academically beyond the classroom.  Course advancement is one opportunity available for our students.  Students may enroll in an approved math, science, or world language (Spanish, French, or Chinese) course of study outside of SRVUSD that may lead to course advancement.  We also recognize that advancement is not for all students.  Families must determine if their student(s) can manage the fast pace curriculum delivery.

Update:  SRVUSD is making many changes regarding math advancement (different than the past).  Please see the district website below for the most accurate information and deadlines:
